Virual Cookie Exchange Day Three

 Hello!

And welcome to the third day of the Virtual Cookie Exchange Blog Hop!  A big thank you to Carol for organizing all the fun for us!  I think this is one of my favorite hops!

I am not going to share a cookie or cookie recipe with you but I did use my gingerbread man cookie cutter~  to make ornaments!  :-)  I used to make these many years ago when my kids were small and I have to tell you, the house smells so wonderful after you dry a batch!

This is what I did. Gather some simple ingredients~

You will need approx ¾ cup of applesauce ( any applesauce works, you don't eat the ornaments so go as inexpensively as you like! I had this on my shelf for my DGD, so just used some of it.)
Approx 4 ounces of ground cinnamon (it is hard to measure cinnamon but I think it would also be about ¾ to 1 cup)  Again~ go to the dollar store or get the least pricey one you find.  My little jar was exactly 4 oz and worked perfectly.

And 2 Tablespoons of glue (any glue that dries clear would work, it just helps hold the ornaments together better. I like Elmer's.)

Mix the 3 ingredients and knead until you have a smooth dough. (I wore rubber gloves, but you don't need to, it is not a sticky dough.) You might have to add a bit more applesauce, I didn't but I guess it would depend on how much cinnamon you used.

I rolled my dough out between two pieces of parchment paper to about a generous ¼" thickness.  Don't go too thin as they will break easier.
I used a round toothpick to poke a hole for the twine. I wish I had made the holes a little bigger by working the toothpick in the hole a bit. I found it hard to get my twine through even though I dipped the end in clear fingernail polish to stiffen it.

Place your ornaments on a cookie sheet lined with parchment and dry in a 200ºF oven for approx 2 hours. I flipped them at the 1 hour mark, and then just turned the oven off at 2 hrs and let them cool.

I got a dozen ornaments from a batch. I made 2 batches. ;-) The house smelled so good! And I still can smell them if I pass by the tray. :-)

After they were dry and cool, I used a nail file to smooth any rough edges. Then you can decorate as desired. :-) I used some Tulip paints I had on hand, and only did a few because my DGD told me to save some for her to decorate. :-)  LOL  Actually, I think totally undecorated is a cute way to go too.

The cute little snack mat is from Designs By Juju.  I really need to make a few more. ;-)
Please be sure to visit my fellow bloggers today~

Thanks for stopping by! If you make any ornaments I would love to hear from you!

Your ornaments are adorable, Sandi. Thank you so much for sharing the recipe. It has been years since I have made these and this would be a great project to do with the grandbabies. Merry Christmas

The house always smells so good with a fresh batch of these ornaments. They are one of our favorite family projects at Christmas. Thanks for sharing your recipe. We have a special box to store these ornaments in and have some from 20 years ago - they don't smell quite as good as they used to. lol

Hi Sandie, nice to "meet" you! I used to work in a church where there was Mother's Day Out, and every year the kids would make these and the smell would come into the office - heavenly! I might just have to try these with my grands, so cute. The little mat is adorable.
Thanks for your kind comments on my blog.

Well Sandie those brought back memories of making cinnamon ornaments! I made those with my kids when they were young and even sold some at craft shows. I had both boy and girl gingerbread cookie cutters. They held up for years!!! I read that to revive the cinnamon scent a couple drops of cinnamon oil does the trick and it did, so I would add drops to them each year. Since I too painted mine, I wanted them to last a few years. I lived in WA state then when I made them and somehow they just smelled better there...or is it just the wonderful memories? Merry Merry!

Oh my goodness, those are so stinkin' cute! I have to admit, when I first saw the photo with the glue in it, I had to wonder. LOL!! I think a batch of cinnamon gingers is in my future. They look adorable on your snack mats. Have a very Merry Christmas.

You brought back some great memories - of helping the kids in 4-H to make these one year. Wonder if any of them still have their cinnamon ornaments.

Now that was a great idea to share! I've wondered about these, but never seen a recipe. It seems simple enough I could do it with my GD who is 11.
