First thank you all for your comments! I haven't had time to respond, but thought you would all be interested to know that I did write to Marsha McCloskey~ and she did write back! I just love it when designers find the time to do that!! :-)
She told me that it was fine for me to use the star in my quilt as long as I labeled it giving her credit for the center star, which is her original design and is called Mexican Pinwheel. She also said she loves it when people use her designs, she just isn't so happy when they rename her blocks and then take credit for them. Which I totally agree with! Another thing I really like is how she handled the whole situation~ quietly letting the KC Star know it was her block, not a version of it, but exactly her block, with a different name.
The whole situation gives me lots of things to ponder, as copyright issues totally baffle me most of time. In this instance, it all makes perfect sense. :-)
This isn't the best photo, but I thought you'd like to see all my blocks so far~ I really like the red/white. The sashing is made up of loads of 1 inch HST's~ maybe I should start working ahead? ;-)
Thank you again for stopping by, for leaving such thoughtful comments and just for being here for me.
It means the world to me!
Happy weekend!
And happy stitchin'!

I am so glad it all worked out for you! Unfortunately it's really hard to police copyright products.
Copyright is a very baffling issue.
I was excited to see that Marsha responded to your note. She's definitely a class act.
Thank you for sharing your story.
I am always confused with copy right for quilts - so many blocks that are in the newest books are still the same blocks that have always been around - is it the fabric choices and the instructions that are copyright? I'm not sure because looking at blocks in some of my newest blocks I can pick them out and give them the name that they had a hundred years ago.
glad she worked with you on it.
How exciting that she did reply. It would be very frustrating as a designer to have another publication use her design with a different name. Hopefully they didn't know.
And these red/white blocks are really pretty. Love the look!
The star design must be in her newer book which I don't have. I looked and it was not in the first book which I have in my quilt library. I am glad that you have permission to use the block.
Thank you for the story behind the block ... I think it is beautiful and if I get so lucky to make it, I'd like to give credit where credit is due.... beautiful work!!
You did the right thing and glad you got a favorable response as this really is a beautiful block to have at the centerpiece.
I'm glad you got it sorted out. This copyright thing is a really confusing pain in the you-know-where. I think the copyright applies to the instructions you are given on how to make the quilt rather than on the design of a block, otherwise nobody could ever design quilts and write patterns unless they have an absolutely new block that has never been done before!
I'm so happy this worked out for you. Marsha sounds like a really nice lady! Copyright law is very convoluted. I find it best to just ask permission, give credit, and not try to understand the whole thing. I contacted Anne Sutton a couple of years ago because I changed a rabbit on one her designs to a dachshund. I asked because I was going to post on a public forum about it. She couldn't have been nicer. Better to be safe than sorry!
Lovely! This is going to be a beauty!
A beautiful BOM and the perfect way to deal with a sticky situation.
Oh how I love Feathered Star. Yours is gorgeous and so striking in red and white. I did one, once upon a time, just one. It's up there on my "one day" list along with double wedding ring!
